“Hear O Israel”
Word Biblical Commentary, Volume 6B: Deuteronomy 21:10–34:12 Form/Structure/Setting
In Jewish tradition, the tenth of the eleven weekly portions in the lectionary cycle of Torah readings from Deuteronomy (32:1–52) is called האזינו, “let us give ear,” from its opening word. This text includes what is more commonly known as the “Song of Moses” (32:1–43).
Summarized Bible: Complete Summary of the Old Testament Chapter Thirty-Two
The warning and consoling words of God sent down from heaven should sink into our hearts and soften them as the rain softens the earth, so make us fruitful in obedience.
This is the 10th of 11th weekly readings from the Torah. It is titled, “Let Us Give Ear”
The warning and consoling words of God sent down from heaven should sink into our hearts and soften them as the rain softens the earth, so make us fruitful in obedience.
God through Moses and his hand are going to teach us how we should walk, the what, where, why and how for following his renewed covenant.
The promise, I will make you a great nation is still there. How can the Israelites get back on track and how should we live once we are on track.
Listen, you heavens, and I will speak; hear, you earth, the words of my mouth. Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants.
Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants.
God here is holding court, he is making a point because Israel had abandoned their side of the covenant.
Lesson #1
God here is holding court, he is making a because Israel had abandoned their side of the covenant.
Let my teaching fall like rain…
Be teachable
Don’t be stubborn, be mend-able, mold-able, be willing to shift and change positions…
Just like a child, be teachable.
Just like a child, be teachable.
Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”
I pray that our faith and our direction from the Lord is always received like a child
Back to our passage
I will proclaim the name of the Lord. Oh, praise the greatness of our God! He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.
Moses is acting here as a character witness for the Lord.
“Oh praise the greatness of our God!” God is GREAT! I think we know that. God has a GREAT REPUTATION!
Lesson #2 - Reputation
Your reputation matters. Everyone has a reputation and we are judged by it.
Especially because we are followers of Christ.
What can we do with a “tarnished” reputation? Improve it, change it, don’t act like you used to and
Don’t expect others to all of a sudden look at you differently.
Lesson #3 - Perfection
“He is the Rock, his works are perfect,”
God is dependable. He is right there, every time, every circumstance,
With exactly what needs to be done, not always what we want done!
Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
“Perfect” here is better translated as “mature, whole,” loving without limits
Jesus is not frustrating his hearers with an unachievable ideal but challenging them to grow in obedience to God’s will—to become more like him.
“While sinless perfection is impossible, godliness, in its biblical concept, is attainable.”
Regardless This is a tough verse… That is our standard, but He is our standard bearer.
If we feel we are on shaking group in any part of our lives, know the He is dependable to do exactly the right thing…Every time. He is PERFECT!!
That’s a tough verse… That is our standard, but He is our standard bearer. Never quite able to carry the standard but we can follow closely behind.
Never quite able to carry the standard but we can follow closely behind.
If we feel we are on “shaky ground group” in any part of our lives, know the He is dependable to do exactly the right thing…Every time. He is PERFECT!!
Lesson #4 - He is a ROCK
The KNOWLEDGE of God can lead to no other response than to acknowledge His MIGHT.
He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.
Specifically He is a rock
Lesson #4 - He is ROCK!
Jeshurun grew fat and kicked; filled with food, they became heavy and sleek. They abandoned the God who made them and rejected the Rock their Savior.
You deserted the Rock, who fathered you; you forgot the God who gave you birth.
He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.
Lesson #5 - Integrity
Our God is “upright,” He has integrity. He is going to do what he says he will do, in His own time.
“God who does no wrong, upright...”
Lesson #6 - Be just, be fair
I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war.
Don’t put your thumb on the scale when selling meat. Be fare,
Hate evil, love good; maintain justice in the courts. Perhaps the Lord God Almighty will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph.
Maintain yourself always being truthful and fair.
Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be condemned.
A false witness will not go unpunished, and whoever pours out lies will perish.
Let the Lord judge the peoples. Vindicate me, Lord, according to my righteousness, according to my integrity, O Most High.
Finally #7…he calls us to be humble
He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
You save the humble but bring low those whose eyes are haughty.
Let’s look at the lessons learned
Be teachable
Have a good reputation
Strive for perfection, as God is perfect
Be a ROCK!!
Have integrity
Be fair
Be humble
This is a LIFETIME worth of instruction. These lessons all together make up your armor. This is the armor that you do battle with each and every day.
Don’t grow weary that your armor is a little thin in places.
Return to the metal shop and continue to build it up.
Surround yourself with those who have strength where you are weakest.
In your weakest place, Christ will show-up and be your strength. Don’t forget to call on the Lord when you need him the most.
In your weakest place, Christ will show-up and be your strength. Don’t forget to call on the Lord when you need him the most.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
